Preview of Ancient Egypt

WAY back when I started teaching 5/6, (11 years ago...) we started the tradition of creating plastercloth Egyptian funeral masks - and the tradition will continue this year. But what else would you like to explore? Check out some of the sites I have listed to the left and begin to explore your options... Eventually, you will complete a project that will be part of our Class Ancient Egypt Museum display. If you find something interesting, tell us about it on the class blog.

I'd like to find out more about mummification. It's really interesting how they had to take out the organs and preserve the body. Even though they didn't have electricity, those Egyptians were geniuses.

I am happy to tell you that there are many mysteries about Egypt still... so many of your questions are "real" questions. For example, Egyptologists are still debating how the pyramids were built and, though some will say they "know", it is still very much a question.

I wonder how the Ancient Egypt was found?

About Time: I am not sure of your true identity. Come and see me at school - only my class members should be posting to this site. Thanks.

I would like to learn about the Rosetta Stone. It helped us decode hierogyphics, which plays a huge role in modern understanding of ancient Egypt.

I want to learn about the spinx and how the nose fell off.

I see your point harry plopper, and I don't think what happened in asterix & obilix was the true story. The reason I would like to learn hieroglyphics is so i could learn a new language. Also I think its interesting how we have now substituted pictures for words.

These sound like great topics to pursue - next week, we will look at "getting the lay of the land", the geography of the Nile River Valley and read about the grand sweep of Egyptian History. The following week, (Halloween week!) we will create the plaster funeral masks molded to your very own faces) and learn more about mummification. I am investigating the idea of mummifying a chicken. What do you think of that? Sounds like the major interests are mummies, pyramids, hieroglyphics, Rosetta Stone, and religion. The Egyptian gods are really interesting - very different from the gods of other groups in some ways. We will touch on all of these things as a whole group, but as we go along, keep in mind that you will complete a three week research project which will result in an Egyptian Museum. You will hear more about this later, but keep it in mind.

OK - so now, take the things you said you were interested in and do a little mini research with the links I listed - see if you are satisfied with the information you find. If you are, great. If not, you may want to continue studying this topic for the research project.
