Special Interests: Ancient Egyptians

So now, do a little bit of digging about the things that you said you were interested in - check out my links or research on your own. Post what you learned. For this week, posts should be done in paragraph form. Tell us about what you have learned and what you still want to know - if someone posts a question about a topic, such as "When was the Rosetta Stone discovered and by whom?" or "What was the Narmer Palette?" Feel free to investigate and then get back to the group about your findings as well as your own questions.

One of the things I would like to learn about is ancient Egyptian activites. I thought if MS.Baker gave us a report to do I thought I could pick and research one activity and the class could do it.I would also like to learn how they built the tombs and if they had to rebuild them alot because they fell down at first.
I also found a interesting fact: Dr. Hawass found a mummy. The the out side of the mummy was all covered in different dezines and colors and they had not faded. they also found two false doors.(secret doors)

I just learned a lot about how mummies are made. Did you know that the top of the canopic jars were shaped like animals to represent the four sons of a god? You probably did MRS. Baker, you know everything about ancient Egypt.
There were about twenty layers of bandages wrapped arond every part of the mummy before those embalmers were done.
They cut a slit in the side of the body to take the organs out. Imagine having to do that for a job!
The thing that suprised me most though, was that they threw out the brain. I would have thought that that was the most important part. But apparently not.

I learned that there are about 2,000 hierogliphics and the pyramid that Cheops was put in they didn't finish the air shaft. It wasn't that it didn't have a hole all the way therw it did but they didn't finish making one part big enough for there robot to fit the entire shaft. Hey, get this the egyptains stoped the mummifugation proses in a.d because most of the egyptains became chrstains.

I would like to find out how the Phinks nose fell off. I learned that making a mummie take very long it takes 70 days to complet making a mummie. It's kind of like how it is for us, except for the mumifing, it costs a lot,and it takes a while to get it over with. Pigwidgeon the sons of Horus jars are sometimes made for organs. The baboon jar is for lungs, the jackal head jar was for stomachs, the human head jar was made for liver and the falcon head jar was for intastines. The Egyptians pulled out the brains with a hook and through the brain away because they didn't think it was inportant.

I never knew that they bacame christians, Kiderkiddsvaagingaagaan, where did you learn that?
And Midnight, to answer tour question, nobody knows how the Sphinks lost it's nose, so really, it's useless studying about it. all you'll get are theories, and however interesting those are, they're just guesses. it was most likely somthing natural, like erosion.

I learned that the Nile River is, like our Mad River, one of the few rivers in the world that actually flows north.

Sipleahoppatense- I think that false doors are not "secret doors" but doors that are carved on the wall that only allow spirits, not people, to pass through. Food was placed behind the doors, so only spirits could get to it. The spirits would then have food in the afterlife.

I learned about the gods the Egyptians worshiped.Osiris, and Isis were some gods they worshiped.Did you know that the Egyptians started to convert Christianity.

Anonymous said...

No I didn't know that. I also didn't no that the mad river and the nile were two of the only rivers that flowed north. where did you find that? Also this a fun fact I just know...you may know it also but; Memphis is the capital of Egypt, memphis is also a city in what U.S state?

sorry i didn't read yours kidderkivvagaan so i repeated the same thing.midnight pigwideon is right a plane could have ran into it for all we know. But I doubt a plane ran into the sphinxes nose.I've also learned that Egyptians close were made out of linen.

Sipleahoppatense: What kind of things do you mean when you say "activities"? Sounds interesting...

Midnight: I disagree with those who would dissuade you from thinking about the theories regarding the Sphinx and its nose - it is OK to study a mystery! And, sometimes, it is a lot more fun than studying something where all of the facts are known. It leaves you wondering, and personally, I like that, though I understand that some folks may feel differently.

Pigwidgeon: I don't know everything about Ancient Egypt, BUT I did know about the canopic jar heads - :) Maybe we should make canopic jars for our mummified chicken organs - what do you think?

Phat Mann: Nice connection with the Mad/Nile River - I heard you went to an ancient Egypt exhibit in Boston - what was the most interesting thing you saw?

Flanders/kidderkizvaagan (sp?) Religion does play an important part in any culture and the conversion of many to Christianity is a very interesting time period. Now, most Egyptians practice Islam, but there are still Coptic Christian churches. I went to one while I visited - there are pictures in the album I brought in - you are welcome to look.

Ernie - yes, I made that connection too, but I wonder why Tennessee chose that name? Would be interesting to research that...

Good conversations folks - please do proofread though - :)

I looked on the links for Egypt and I didn't see any thing of why the Red sea is called Red sea.I think that it would be fun to put the stuff that was in the chicken in the jars and draw faces or heads on the jars.

I agree with you Ms. Baker about the canopic jars it wold be fun to make them. Pigwigeon I forgot were I found that they became christans.
Ms. Baker did the egyptains build the temples in the montains so it wouldn't be tempting to for grave robbers to rob the tombs?

After I looked on some websites I realized how hard it was to make a mummie. All we did was cover a chicken with salt, and I am glad!!! I never realy thought about the proses of making a mummie. First they cut the side of the body.Ouchhh! Then they take out all there intesdents and drain there blood. Gross!!! As we know they dry them, salt them, rap them, put them in there cofens, put there intendents in a jar and throw them in a tume. This takes 70 days!!!

Mrs. Baker: The most interesting thing I saw at the museum was probably the different layers of a coffin. There is the mummy, than several wood coverings, than the coffin.
I don't know how I knew about the Mad River flowing north, but I learned about the Nile doing the same thing on one of the pages. (I would look at which one, but if I get off this page, I'll lose what I've written so far)
Some more weird trivia for Ernie: The current Egypian capital has the same name as which Yankees infielder?

Flanders, I believe it was you who wanted to learnn about the egyptian religion. well, on the history for kids website (shown on blog main page), it has several paragraphs that talks about the religion. Also Daphne, I'm not sure but you didn't have to reach inside the chicken. but, then agin, you have tons of them so you might have before.I would enjoy making the jars. It is hard to believe that we are mummifying chickens.

Tini - try this link. It shows all of the natural resources - like gold, natron etc...

http://www.ancientegypt.co.uk/geography/explore/res.html

It is from the same site that is listed in the sidebar of links on the blog, but you have to use the drop down menu and choose "natural resources" like we did in class.

Let me know how it goes - email me at sbaker@moretownschool.org though, rather than on the blog.

Thanks!

Ms. Baker

One thing I learned (I think it was on the guardian's Egypt site under "Mummy FAQ's) was that baboons and crocodiles were also mummified, because they had religious significance. It must have been hard to go through that crocodile's long nose to pick out the brain!

I learned about the bent pyramid. Thats a pyramid that rose at a higher angle than a normal pyramid, and then sloped, to an angle just below that of an average pyramid. The two theories for this are that the king (Sneferu) didn't want to have to do the extra work to finish the would-be very high top, the other was that, as they built, cracks formed in the rock from the high angle and weight. Another peculiar thing about the Bent pyramid is that it had two doors. One facing north, as was usual, the other facing west. I wonder if the west door had anything to do with Egyptians wanting to be buried on the west side of the Nile.

I learned that Seth was kind of egyptian verson of the devil. Seth killed Orrises the father of the god of the sky hourus. The wife of isises was named isisi.Seth as I said killed orisisi and then chopped him up, then scattered the pieces of the body all over the globe isisi found all the pieces of the body. After this orisisi was believed to be the first mumie.
Oh get this! The god of the gods is named anum

The god of Gods? Is that like Zeus? Why would the crocodile be of signifigance? Does anyone know what Anum means? I was wondering what Horus meant so I looked at the sites. Finally after searching and searching i found what i was looking for. The site said that horus came from hr (her). I wasn't very satisfied with that so I will keep looking.
