I do not think that we should extend out school time. Kids will not be able to do thee homework without rushing. Kids will not have as much family time. I think it could cause stress and pressure on them and they might not do as well at home. Pluss do you think that they will be able to focus as well if they are as tired. and what if they had theater after school. By the time they would get home they would have very little time to get there homework done. My answer is no to extending the time we are in school.
I HATE THE IDEA OF HAVING LONGER SCHOLL DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!
We already have longer days than most schools anyway!! I would only agree with this is if school started at 9:00am and ended at 5:00pm....... but ONLY if we didnt have homework!!! :(
I also think kids wouldnt have time to be kids! You know.... sports, family, after school programs!!! Things like that.
ps. Mssssss.... Baker. Hmmmmm... what are we going to do with you!! Niiiiccceeee... assignment! A letter to a "school board" for more school???? Just Kidding!!! :)
I agree with both tini and sipleahoppatense. Why should we have longer school days? I know that some cases could be made that, in a previous TFK article, about 4-5 weeks ago, average test scores showed that students were only going up two points in Math and Writing from the past two years. And I believe that the article stated that Massachusetts had the best average test scores. So Vt really needs to do better because we don't want to be beaten by Red Sox fans. (At least I don't, I know some of you are big fans (cough) phatt man.)I still don't want school days to be longer because just as tini said 'kids wouldn't have time to be kids. And I think that sums it up; 'kids wouldn't have time to be kids.' If we aren't going to pay attention because our minds are somewhere else or in a different subject thinking what they would do when they get home, or dreading the homework, why even bother adding time when they could be home doing homework, or studying, or just being kids!
Also it says in the article "More Time for School", that Fifth grader Aleysia Smith says that "Sometimes, at the end of the day, I feel tired and grumpy." That shows that fifth and six graders might not be able to take it because that...
1. Adds on to the school day. 2. Detracts from there time for homewok and play. 3. Could possibly add on to homework with the extra studies in school. All of these are reasons why I personallly don't think that more time should be added on to the school day.
Wow. Adults really are out to get us. We get our few precious moments away from school, and they want to take that away. Most kids do things away from school, such as sports. that helps us keep physically fit. I can't imagine sitting at our desks even longer than we already do will be very healthy. The one thing I can imagine is keeping just the kids that need a little help after longer, like one of the schools in the article does. But again, that doesn't seem very fair to me.
P.S: Ernie, that cough sounds bad. perhaps you should stop by Vincent's for some medicine.
I agree with phat mann kids need time out of school. It is precious to kids and with out it us kids would be crushed. And I don't think anybody would ever want to hurt us kids.Unless adults are mean and want to see sad faces on kids. But I mean who wants to see kids sad.But if we were forced to we shouldn't have homework.
Sipleahoppatense is right. If kids have more school and theatre practice, they might rush on their homework, and thus, get worse grades. And isn't the point of being stuck in that torture chamber adults call school to get better grades? Even if we manage to finish all of the homework, we might have had to stay up later into the night and be less attentive in the torture chamber, A.K.A. school, the next day. I don't see why Moretown elementary should extend the hours if wer'e doing just fine as it is. As Phat Mann has said before, "why fix it if it ain't broke?"
I hate the idea of making school longer. to be honest I think that school should be shorter than it is. I think that school should end at 1.00 pm so we can spend more time with are family. making school longer would cut time with are family we will feel lonely so that we feel like we don't have a family.also we should't have homework.so I think that mrs baker should send these comments to the principal and let her see all of this and we might change something at the school.
ps.mrs baker can you send these comments to the principal.
OK anti-lengthening folks - Your reasons seem valid - wanting to spend more time with family, wanting to pursue other worthwhile interests, difficulty getting homework done, physical fitness - I also appreciated the counterargument that if the day were extended homework should not be assigned. That is a compromise and makes a good point.
Some folks (again, don't blame the messenger) like the idea of an extended school year, rather than an extended day. They think that students "lose" too much over the summer...might be something to think about when discussing this.
Greendragon - you are more than welcome to write a persuasive letter to Ms. Barone about shortening the school day, giving your reasons for doing so. I do know, however, that there are state and federal laws that dictate how many days kids need to attend school per year and minimum hours per day.
One thing that proponents of a longer school day often say is that kids just watch TV and play computer games at home - they are not "buying" the idea that kids are exercising and doing valuable things with their time. I am wondering how kids really do spend their time...
Oh and Tini - good thing you proofread and corrected the spelling of the word "scholl" - it is just that kind of thing that makes people think kids need more time at school!
I realize that some kids waste their time at home, but I don't play video games and am not allowed to watch T.V. during the week. I spend basically all of my time away from school doing instruments, sports, practicing my play, or doing homework. Extending the school day just to keep us away from home sounds crazy, and isn't fair to kids like me.
I also agree with phat mann. What if you aren't the one doing badly or causing the thought of more school? What happenes to the good people? Like what happened with Abraham when he was trying to persuade G-d that if there were 10 righteous in two cities then G-d would spare them. But there weren't. There were only 2 people so then G-d would have killed them with the naughty. So Abraham snuck them out.
So, that is kind of what I'm trying to say, but it isn't that dramatic.
I agree with tini and eirnie. If they extended our shool hours that meens grumpy every day ,rushing, and like eirnie had said if you have an after shool thing and when you get home you'd probably have supper and then you'd have to go to bed. That means you couldn't do your home work. Like sipleahoppatense said about stress, my sister had this assembly in harwood about this guy who knew a kid that was under stress and had committed suicide, and I don't think thats fair to the students! That is what the school bord should be talking about WHAT WOULD EXTENDING THE SCHOOL TIME DO TO THE KIDS? Ms.Baker what you said about tini's correction, just because we make a tini mastake does not mean that they should add more school hours thats like over doing the power that they have and thats soooo not fair.
p.s. Ms.Baker did you say that green dragon is welcome to ask Ms.Barone about shortining the school hours because you'd like to get off work at 1:00?
What the heck does that mean ernie? Phat mann is right. what happens to the kids that aren't computer freaks? In fact i think most kids spend more time on homework then rotting their brains out. Between reading and homework and sports and after-school activities, I'd say most kids only watch 1 1/2 - 2 hours a day, if any! If we did extend the school day, we shouldn't have as much homework, or we'll be spending all night in our rooms (or wherever you do your homework), and that, as green dragon says, would detract from family time.
I didn't think anyone would understand what I was saying, but I gave it a chance. It is a jewish story, basically talking about what would happen to the good along with the bad? That was what I was trying to say.
I didn't think anyone would understand what I was saying, but I gave it a chance. It is a jewish story, basically talking about what would happen to the good along with the bad? That was what I was trying to say.
Thank you mrs Baker I will even make a gragh to show mrs brone that kid agree that school should be shorter and that homework is hard and it should stop.!!!! also kids should be alouded to have more recess time and more lunch choses like food from restaunts from around america.
Ernie you always mess up.ms.baker we only really watch t.v.Saturday morning when all the cartoons are on.I agree with you again phat mann most kids are doing sports, band, theater, and they have not so appreciated homework. They don't have any time rotting there brains.but some people like phat mann said just waste there time when there at home.I mean the adults had there precious time when they were a kid.so why are they trying to strip it away from us.I don't think it is fare.
Flanders and Pigwidgeon - a gentle reminder - absolutely NO negative statements about other classmates or their posts - you can disagree with someone respectfully without saying "what the heck do you mean" or "you always mess up" - you have some good thoughts and questions so keep the discussion positive.
Midnight - I did not mean to offend you - I was trying to point out that things like spelling really matter to some of the people who are making these decisions. It is going to be important, in the future, for people who want to make a difference to be able to proofread as misspellings are very distracting to the reader. I men how mny peeple dont notis all the mistackes in this sentens? :)
I appreciate that you all have strong feelings about this topic - so do I. One of the reasons that I am against lengthening the school day is that there ARE kids who are using their free time for good purposes - family time, music lessons, sports and good old healthy hanging around! I think there should be more energy spent on helping kids/families who are not finding quality things to do with their time - maybe a recreation center in Moretown? Increased access to the Gym after school? I am sure there are lots of ideas.
Green Dragon - I am glad you are so excited at the idea of writing a letter to Ms. Barone. As you write, try to think of things from her point of view. I look forward to reading it - :)
Keep discussing and remember that we are all classmates and we need to be careful that when we disagree, we do so respectfully. We even need to be respectful of those folks who do think there should be a longer school day - I may not agree, but I do want to understand where they are coming from. They are not "evil" or "wrong", they just have a different opinion.
Kids need time to be kids. And as someone said while we were discussing this in class, "when they respond to people that say the kids might get lazy, they reply, they would have an hour at the end of the day for gym or recess." But as some of you have mentioned, why keep them in school longer for that? I know that I really enjoy gym but you are basically just adding 45 minutes of school which still seems like an hour. Plus, that takes away from homework time, which we might end up needing more of considering more tests, and probably more homework. There are 9 mistakes including punctuation.
Great discussion. You all seem to feel that lengthening the school day would mean sitting at your desks for longer amounts of time. Here's something else to consider... What if you had all of your core subjects like literacy, math, science and social studies completed by 1:00pm? Then, from 1:00 to 5:00, you could choose from a variety of pursuits: sports, dance, drama, study hall, art which could include photography and making jewelry, music which could include instrumental, vocal, composition, field trips for individual research (limitless), foreign language(maybe Chinese or Russian or Italian in addition to French),cooking, gaming, hiking, skiing, extra help, and last but not least, if you still had extra time, hanging out with your friends. You would have used your study hall to complete any homework, so that's not a problem. The purpose of extending the school day for me is certainly not to add anything but more to be able to allow you the time you need to understand certain topics more deeply and to provide each of you with the time you need to pursue those interests that matter most to you. What do you think?
Talk about having L...o...n...g... thoughts!!! Maybe we should send this to our "school board" that we are writing to this week. To convince them NOT to have longer school days.... even though we are "trying to get them to HAVE longer days. :( Bbblllaaahhh...!
ms. barone you are so right i mean if we really tried we could things done fast!! As we all know at home you do you're chores so you can do what you want right? Now of course the teachers might not let us play from 1:00-5:00pm that is a little much but we could do maybe an hour extra and do an all class game of somthing like that. sometimes school is not fun but if we try we can make it fun.
I agree with siplahopptense. If it isn't fun, make it fun. But by that I don't think that she means ruin the point in doing it but if your bored, try and make life more interesting. And something that Ms. Baker told us in math, if it isn't hard enough make it harder. That means that you aren't doing it right because it is way too easy. But I think that the rule stops when Albert Einstein comes in. But for us in school, it stops when you go to far to make things fun. With homework you can make it interesting and funny like phat mann and his Vincents, or Pigwedgeon and his "torture chamber".
I don't know if I want the school day longer or shorter. Green dragon said that we should have the day shorter and if that did happen then we might get more homework. I don't think we should send these to the shool board yet because almost everyone made an error and it might give the school board a bigger reason. If the school day were expanded then homework might have less homework. I noticed that a few people said that we would be gtrumpy if more time was added to the day but if it started later in the day then we might not be as grumpy. I agree with phat man (I think it was.) that kids need to be kids. I still don't know if I want school to be longer or shorter.
I am sorry Ernie. But if we have longer school days kids might get a little bored.Right now kids are fascinated with what they are learning. But if we have a longer day kids will just get bored and not pay attention.Which I think you teachers won't want.
It is true that we might not be as grumpy if the school days started later, and about the errors but I believe, to everyone here, it seems a crime no to be sure about school day length. (But I don't consider it a crime.)It would most definately add to homework because there would be more topics to study in school. But You never know untill it happens.
I think it would stink if the school day got longer.sure the test scores might go up but the health might go down. The teacher might get more time to teach but reces would need to be longer,if the school day was made longer there would be less time to play sports and that.
Ernie, I have a question, Why would there be more subjects just because the school day is longer? Spider Pig I think your right, kids would be late for sports if the school day were longer.
Ernie as Kidarkitsvagangagan said why would there be more "subjects" in the day if the day was longer?,I guess that it makes a little sense but is`t the things we learn all at our curriculum levels?
