Ancient Culture Research

So... we have studied two ancient cultures together, Ancient Egypt and Ancient China, and now you are choosing the next culture to study independently. What are you learning?

Please be sure to include in your post the culture that you are studying and try to connect to the last post in some way. As always, be sure to proofread.

I am going to study the Mians and their calender or just as much as I can find. If I do not get the Mians I will study Irelan, but I hope I can study the Mians.

Well Spider Pig it looks like you got your wish. I am happy that I am studying the Ancient Romans. I hope to learn about the emperors and the famous Coliseum.

Sounds interesting Ernie, but I'd much rather study about the Viking than the Romans. They seem a bit more interesting to me. But if they are your preference, study away. I look forward to learning about how the culture of the Vikings spread. I know that they traveled to and raided many lands far from there own, but not which ones. It's funny how a small group of people could spread so far out for the simple means of pillaging. But, hey, you have to make a living, even if it stops someone else's living.

I am studying the Philippines with Kelsey, (yes Kelsey I spelled it right) while I was researching I found many things on the Philippines but nothing on ancient Philippines. I found out that Togalog and English are the two main languages.

Simpleahoppatense I had the same problem as you but now I have some information about Mongol HISTORY! I found some information when I Googled "Ancient Mongolia History". Maybe you should try googling "Ancient Philippines History".

A interesting fact I found is the reason Mongol's buildings and clothing is like the Chinese's is because a long time ago the Chinese had a battle with mongols and they gain control. That was the reason for the Great Wall Of China, to keep the Mongols out of China!

I am learning about The Celts! I hav'nt studied all that much so there for I don't know much about them. But i have learned something...... The Celts culture stayed in Ireland for the longest.

Daphne..... I also heard that the Chinese had a battle with Mongols too... surprising huh!

TaTa for now!!

To Flanders, no it is not a coincidence. I have found out that rome was founded by the the two sons or Mars, the war god. Rome was found in 739 B.C. it was once ruled by kings but 230 years later it was changed to being led by a Republic.

First of all, I need to warn everyone reading this that the Norse helmets with the horns sticking out of the sides are a MYTH! The common helmets had a ridge on top, a nose guard, and a visor just to cover the eyes.
I have a book that says everything you could possibly want to know about the vikings' gods, goddesses, and daily life, so it's really good for my topic. The Norse are actually turning out to be much more interesting than I thought. I already thought that I knew a lot about them, but now I'm finding tons of new stuff that I never knew (or had just forgotten about).

Its the same with me Pigwidgeon, the Incas seem more interesting than I thought, but I never knew anything about them. Today I learned a few Incan words. Here they are: Killa(moon), Yaku(water), Pahuac(flying), Palta(pear), Cui(guinea pig), Cusi(joy), Anyas(skunk), and Atoc(fox).
Sometimes In books I saw pictures with the vikings helmets like you described it.
I also learned how many gods the Incas have, 52.

Anonymous said...

Cool! You found some Incan words that sounds like it is interesting. You of course found the word for guinea pigs or a cui. I found out that the Mayan calender was very exact as in, they predicted that the Spaniards would come and slowly take over, they believed the earth was made in1134 BC. I think but the end is : December 31st, 2012.

Anonymous said...

Wow! That sounds interesting. But wasn't there millions and millions of years before the a.d. period began? I know that the Mayans were very, very, good at predicting the future, but I'm just curious.

I an studying the culture of the Aboriginies of Australia.
Spider Pig and Kiddkitzvaagan: The Aboriginies believe that the world started in something called the "Dreamtime." This, they believe, was a period when everything was very hazy, since the world was just being formed. They also believe that that humans were created at this point. Aboriginies may not have existed since the start of time, but they have been around for a long while-there is proof of their existence that dates back over 60,000 years!

Anonymous said...

geezzzz! Phat Man you know a lot. I know nothing about the Aborigines. I think that is how you spell it. In Tagolag, you say uh-oh for saying yes. I have not found to many things because I have been working on my story and finished it yesterday.

Thank you, Sipplehopatence. I have noticed that many of you are having trouble finding information about the ancient times of your culture. For instance, if you were studying the Native Americans, all you might find is information about their life on the Indian Reservations in modern times, and how their ways of life have changed over the years. But, luckily, with the Aboriginies, their beliefs and customs are basically the same as they were tens of thousands of years ago. This makes them a excellent resourse for anthropoligists studying how humans lived in prehistoric times.

For my project I am having trouble finding information about my cultures art.I learned that vikings really liked traveling by ship. But during the winter the moved by sleds, skis, and skates. And they also traveled by snowshoes in the winter.Vikings believed that every viking soldier should be buried with his sword.Like you spider pig I have a bunch a resources to.

ALL I CAN SAY FOR NEXT WEEK IS THAT I AM FULLY PREPARED FOR OUR ROUGH DRAFTS OF OUR REPORTS.

Hi Everyone... I had a productive day with our district Science Committee and have enjoyed reading your comments so far - if you have trouble finding information on the Internet, think about trying different key words, or adding the word ancient or history to your search. For example, don't search for "Japan" search for "Ancient Japan" or "Japanese History".

I am going to be busy writing narratives tomorrow - be good to Ms. Moorehouse and I will see you on Friday...

I have found out that the Romans were not the nicest people in the world. Although the Inca and the Mayan's had their means of sacrifice, Rome's was much different. In Rome there is something called the Coliseum. I have a page of notes on it but I won't tell you everything. It was used for gladiator battles. There was sand on top of the floor to soak up the blood. In 72 A.D, it was built. The Coliseum was first used in 80 A.D. The Romans had trap doors so animals like lions or other gladiators could come out and mix up the fight. This was their entertainment. And when they were bored of that, they went into naval battles.

The ancient Philippines houses were nipa huts, made with banana leafs, bamboo, clay, and string(wich is parts of the banana leaf). I learned that the common language is Tagalog, a languaged that is mixed with English, Spanish, and Pilipino.

Anonymous said...

The battles that the Philippines had was with the Spanish and Chinses.

I am studing the ancient inuits and I learned that the inuits live in igloos. They have a living space, 2 storage places and even a entrence. The inuits are very talented, They make there own boats too. They have a large boat for the killing large animals like the seal and it is used for long term transportation. The kayak for killing small animals and made for a single traveler.

Anonymous said...

The inuits also have large heavy jackets that keep you warm in the winter. The jackets are made of deer skin and with a furry outside. The inuits also make ther boats out of that. The inuits also have deer & caribou skin tents. oh i also forgot that the inuits make ther boats out of the skin. The inuits have dogsleds and dogs for transportation.

Anonymous said...

I found out that navajo blankets a very very rare. also pigwideon I would like to study vikings too.

Anonymous said...

Harry Plopper, how interesting that they got around on dog sleds, ancient Mongol's main transportation was on horseback.

i have been studying more about the ancient Mongolian horse. These horses are a breed of wild horse and there is less and less of them each year. Many of them are brought to zoos where they do not have enough room to run around. Mongolia is one of the only places in the world were they still roam free.

Sorry I did not capitalize that I.

Ernie- The Aboriginies lived in Australia, which you know is very far from any other land. Because of this, they didn't get into very many battles with other countries, since there was no one to fight against. Aboriginal tribes usually didn't fight other Aboriginal tribes, because it was their belief that the world was created the way that it should be, and that their god assigned land and wealth to each tribe.

phatt man,
you learned a lot about the aborigines. even if i had studied it I would not have learned that much. I learned that the philippines have 17 different anguages.

Anonymous said...

Sipleahoppatense, you were off by 53 languages, the Philippines have 70 different languages. They also thought they were the only ones on the island.
