Food for Thought

Both Ethan and Noah mentioned food as a blog topic, so let's try it. You can post recipes, favorite foods or even food stories, poems or... You get the idea - just keep it food related and remember to connect to the last post.

I like to cook and make yummy food! I especially like to make choclate chip banana bread it is incredibly good and not to hard to make. Sometimes me and my mom make it in muffin tins but we also make it like bread. It is amazing that somthing made out of old bananas can tast so good!

I guess I'll start the discushen with a story.
Lsat thanksgiving my dad, my brother, some friends and I got to the peoples house that were throwing the fiest. When we got there my dad noticed the turkey was still in the fridge so he put in some warm water to thaw it out so he did. By five'o clock the turkey was still thawing but since everyone wanted nice early dinner the hostess put the turkey in the oven. Since it is around 20 or so minutes per pound it was not till around 8'o clock till the turkey was done (do the math). Still the turkey was not ready for eating so it was put back in the oven till' 9'o clock, finally it was done sort of the senter was a little cold I was told. The good side was that I slept through the masaquer.

Well I have many food stories but I will start with this one. When I awas adopted my parents came to pick me up. I am not sure which but they ether stayed at a hotel after they picked me up or before. Anyhow they stayed and thsi place they thought was going to be really nice because my mom checked it out on the internet. Well when they got there the maid(it was about a 9 room hotel!) had the table set with candels! Not fancy nice ones, cheep colored ones. They got there at dinner time but my sister who was about three had cereal. When it was brought to her she threw it on the floor which also got on the rug and the table cloth and... acording to my mom the waiter. I guess it was a disaster.
Also when I was really young. Really really young I had food problems. My mom would give me a bowl of peas and I would not eat them unless everyone was out of the room and it was really quiet. Not even my dad or sister was aloud in the room. Only my mom. Because I could not be trusted with a full bowl of peas. When they had compony they had to stay outside.
I had to addmit I was pretty picky.
Also.....
when my sister was younger she used to make my dad coffee. Well pour it for him. There it a big difference. my da or mom brought the coffee over and one of them spilled it on her chest. And she had to go to the hospital because she was badly burned.

Just by imagining that I can almost hear a big AHHHHHHHHH! It must have hurt.
One of my favorite foods on earth is one that I don't even have a name for. I just call it "The sausage and cheese spread". We learned it from my dads client, Sarah, who comes to stay with us occasionally. She's showed us a LOT of recipes that she knows, but this was (in my opinion) the best. It comprises only of a jar of old English cheese, a Jimmy Dean sausage roll, half of a stick of butter, and half of a bowl of cream cheese. While it definitely sounds disgusting (not to mention unhealthy) when you hear it, I guarantee that when the sausage is brown and everything is mixed together, it's amazing. I can't deny that it's really unhealthy though. Put it on an English muffin, warm it up, and enter into a world of savory goodness.

Ouch! That must have hurt your sister, Sipleahoppatense.
I like to make crepes. They cook fast, you can put a lot of items on them(Like strawberries, chocolate, syrup, blueberries, etc. etc.). My favorite part about the crepes is that they can be really messy. Everything you put on starts to fall out slowly.
The first time we had crepes at our house, Anthony put everything on he wanted to and sarted shoveing the crepe into is mouth. When he finished, his plate was covered aith chocolate syrup. So he decided to lick it clean.
Ohh, and Daphne, I agree, Banana bread is good(YUMM!).

Pigwidgon...
yes it did hurt. I was not the one to get burned though. But I guess that is an excuse because when I step on someone else's toe I am the one to say ow. Ask Kelsey.
I don't know what to say. That does sound gross but I know what you mean. Like ketchup and mayos.(on fries or something) It sounds ok, looks gross, but tastes really good! Or just plain vinigar. Well in my opinion; it is good but you have to be daring. Like they ALWAYS say. You have to try things before rejecting it. Also an other story...
My sister was really young she ate most of her noodles but then she started to spread them all over herself. On her head, her legs. And this was all on purpose. I have to admit; she is pretty weird.

I ment to respond to pigwigeon.

Kidderkizvaagan...
Yummmmmmmm! Is all I can say!
That sounds good. Yes you are right they are messy. Very. And I also agree with both you and Daphne. Banana Bread is the best!

Great food stories! Nice job connecting to the last post Kidderkizvaagan and Pigwidgeon! I think the first three were posting at the same time -

Anyway, Kidderkizvaagan, we also eat crepes - especially at Christmas - strawberry ones with real whipped cream. You are right about things falling out of them. When Annalise was little though, she had the stomach flu on Christmas and we all got to see those crepes a second time, if you know what I mean. Yup - reverse peristalsis...

Pigwidgeon - your snack does sound a little high in fat, but the ingredients are yummy! I just might try it -

Sipplehopatense: I wonder what the whole "pea" thing was really about! Do you like them now?

Daphne - I love banana bread and your chocolate chip banana bread is the BEST. Maybe you should post the recipe! :)

Spiderpig: Turkeys are hard to thaw and hard to cook- I give your Dad credit for sticking with it. :)

Look forward to the rest of your posts....

Ms. Baker

In response to Daphne, the reason it could be so delicious is because of the chocolate chips. We have chocolate chip cookies in the oven. :^)

I like a lot of foods but my favorite is duck. I know that a lot of people don't like duck but it really is quite good, and you should give it a second chance.
I'm not suggesting that eating animals is good but...never mind. But Pigwidgeon, isn't that really fattening? And also, you sound like a promoter. Which could go to either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it.

Meg Allison said...

I've never had much of a taste for duck, ernie, but I am inspired by your love of it to try it again.

Hmmm... I have to say that my daughter Josie made cupcakes this evening and instead of making our usual kind of frosting (which is a stick of butter, a spoonful of crisco, and about as much confectionary sugar that you can stand), I pulled out my tried and true cookbook, The Joy of Cooking, and we make a real buttercream frosting. We halved the recipe, so she got to use her math skills to divide the ingredients and since the recipe required that we boil and simmer to certain temperatures on the candy themometer, we added some science too.
Wouldn't it have been easier to stick to our old recipe?
Yes!
But, the chocolate cupcakes, now frosted with the buttercream, are the best, the family all agreed, that we ever tasted.

Ernie I do not know a lot of people that like duck except for you and my dad. I think I might of tried it but I am not totally sure. I love butter cream frosting I would have to agree that it is one of the best mrs. allison.
One of my absolute favorite foods is either squid or octopus, yes that is what I said squid or octopus. I think the only difference is that octopus is more chewy than squid, other wise they are really similar. I also like alligator, I know it sounds odd but it is really good in taste. Alligator falls apart easy the same as some fish that are loose in texture.

Oops! sorry about my last post.

Ernie and Spiderpig, I have had duck before, it's GROSS!!!!

I don't really have a favorite food. But there are many that I DON'T like at all! I love ice cream though....... is that considered a food???? Maybe. Well if mot, it should be!!!!!!!!!

I know everybody says that there grandma makes the best chocolate chip cookie's, but the truth is.... tsssss... MINE DOSE!!

Anonymous said...

Ooops!!!

I ment "not" not "mot."

SORRY!

Unlike ernie, and tini I have never had duck before but I do not think that I would like it even though a lot of people in my family like duck besides my brother. I would have to say that my favorite food is pasta. When I go out for dinner I almost always have pasta I think my favorite kind of pasta or the one that I eat the most is ziti even though there are other kinds of pasta that I like just the same.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to try your grandmother's cookies, tini. Anyways, I have a good food story...

My family and I are watching TV. So my sister says that she's going to make some brownies. We're all happy and eager, so we wait fifteen minutes, look up at the bar and see her licking the pan with a spoon. My dad asks if she's put the brownies in, she says yeah, so we wait another fifteen minutes. Dad asks her where the brownies are and she says they're cooking. We wait ANOTHER fifteen minutes and finally, she says that they're done and we run over to try them. They're boiling! She says that she put everything in, and we're all wondering what could have gone wrong when she remembers.
"Oh, I forgot the eggs," she says. Then I tried them, and they tasted like vegetable oil. Of course, we've never let her forget it and never will. The legend will live on and I'll make sure of it.

Anonymous said...

Tini, I don't understand why you think duck is gross. It tastes just like chicken only in my opinion, it tastes beter. But never mind. Not everyone has to like the same food right? I'm pretty sure I have some food stories but I can't think of any at the moment. One of my other favorite foods is french toast. When we go down to Sanibel, Florida, we go to a restaurant called The Lighthouse Cafe'. Although, it really isn't a cafe. We go there for breakfast. My favorite thing there is french toast, as you may have guessed. It is delicious. butter melting on top and drizzling down upon the warm, golden, flaky crust. And the syrup. sliding off of the toast. Man it is good! Well, I hope I didn't make anyone hungry.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I forgot to capitalize the B in butter.

Anonymous said...

Ernie like french toast too. I think it really good with the egg and syrup on it, is like three things as in three small breakfasts with the egg, then toast and sort of like a pancake with the consistency of the toast with the egg on it. Yum!

I glad that we are doing my and Flanders ideas. I also like to talk
about my dad's bbq pork sandwichs.
It is hot pork mixed with bbq sauce
sevred on a bun. It is great for dinner.

Greendragon...
that sounds really good!
I am glad that we are doing your's and flanders idea to because it is really fun!
I never really thought of talking about food and stories about food and etc. as a blog topic!
But I guess it is!
I don't really like to think about the topics I just write them! And when I post the reason I type so fast(an answer to everybody that has asked or said "you type fast")I do not think about what I write...
It just comes to me and I let myself write it. I do not make my hands write. They seam to be able and capable to do it on their own.

Wow! Green Dragon it sounds really good to have bbq with pork and a bun. My favorite is brokly caseroll, you may think its gross but until you try it do not say any thing because its really good. The reson its so good is because my grandma makes it.

I had broccoli at a friend's house, and it was really good. I think the only reason for tht was because it was served with and alfredo cheese, because now I tried it dry, and I hated it. I don't think I would mind if it wasn't for the seeds on top.
Another of my favorite foods is bacon wrapped scallops. We don't have them often, but we do usually when we have guests at a sit-down dinner. I really like them.

Anonymous said...

I like fench toast just like you, Ernie and Spider Pig.
Greendragon, that does sound good. I think I'd because I like most of the things I eat. Just ask Spider Pig, hes the usally saying that.
The food I don't like is the food that comes McDonalds, Burger King, etc. etc. I used to but not any more. I don't like thier food because its just to fried. I'd rather wait in a restaraunt to have a meal(Even though that can take a while).
I must agree Spider Pig, aligator is good.

I have noticed that many of you have been discussing Thanksgiving Turkeys gone wrong, and I have a story of my own to tell:
My Dad once came back home for Thanksgiving after being away at college. He arrived at his parent's home on Thanksgiving evening, expecting to sit right down to dinner, but noticed that the turkey was sitting on the counter, uncooked. He asked his Mom, (who appearently hadn't cooked turkeys a lot) why the turkey wasn't in the oven, and she responded, "Everybody cooks turkeys in the microwave nowadays! I'll just pop it in in a few minutes, and it'll be ready in half an hour." (The microwave was a relitively new invention at the time; appearently my grandmother wasn't very keen on how it worked.)
So, my Dad's mom stuck the turkey in the microwave, at which point it heated up and exploded all over the kitchen. They cleaned up, and ate the rest of the meal without the turkey. (cranberry sauce on it's own! Yum!)

I think it's mso funny how my baby causin eats!!! When she eats her top lip pops out and hots the bottom of her nose!! It's soooooooo.... FUNNY!!!!!!!

Wow does she look like a gorilla when she does that Tini?
My favorite food is an adobo its a Philippine recipe its really good, it has chicken some sort of sauce, some vegetables and rice. Its like a who meal but made in to a soup. its really good. I also like cucumbers with sauce. When my mom was little and when she had a cold, her grandmother would cut up some cucumbers and put vinegar, salt, pepper, and soy sauce. She would put a lot of vinegar in it to make her feel better. so when ever we (my sisters and dad) got sick she would make cucumber and sauce for us, its really good. I know this sounds disgusting but has anyone ever eaten pickles and wiped cream together? It isn't that bad actually, try it.

Anonymous said...

Phat mann that is a good story, at thanks we always go to my grandparents house and she makes really good turkey. My mom also makes really chicken and she sometimes cooks it with maple syrup on it. It tastes really good! I like this years school lunches too. So far my favorites are the mac and cheese and the apple crisp!!! Going back to my first post chocolate chip banana bread can also be very good with a little bit of coconut in it.

Anonymous said...

Ewwww Daphne thats gross, eating turky and maple syrup together. And chocolate chip banana bread I think that sounds interesting but I might not like it because i dont like chocolate or bananas, but different people different tast. Have you tryed maple butter on toast its good. Hey Daphine maybe you should tast it since you like turky and maple syrup.

Anonymous said...

I never judge a weird food mix so midnight I might try turkey and maple syrup(not likely),I like posting from a topic from the Noah apartment. It makes you feel good.Anyway For some reason what I find appetizing is ketchup and cheese. It might seem disgusting but it is good.Usually when I cook I stick to mac and cheese. My favorite meal to eat is what my mom calls the Mexican casserole. It is practically three layers of cheese, a lot of cheese, taco shells, and sour cream.I always scarf down a plate of it in about two minutes. One food story of mine is once is I said I liked brussle sprouts. So my mom bout some and wouldn't let me leave the table until I ate one.So at sat at my table for a half an hour. Then I got bored and ate one,and they were really hot so I fell off my chair.I was able to spit out the stuff in my mouth and not eat any brussle sprouts. That is my way to get out of a situation where I don't want to eat food.

Sara L. Baker said...

Flanders,
Do you think a polite "no, thank you, I don't like brussel sprouts" might have worked better? Seems a little risky to have to fall off your chair everytime (or gross to spew your food!). I once told my son, Alex, that there was chocolate in the middle of the Brussell sprouts - and he ate a whole plate of them looking for that chocolate. After the first five or so, he was suspicious, but I can be pretty convincing to a six year old so...

I know, I know, I should always use my powers for good... it was funny, though. Unfortunately, as an adult, he hates Brussell Sprouts.

I love them. Especially when you put them in a pan with a little olive oil, sugar and vinegar and slow cook them - it makes this sweet, tangy sauce... yum!

The food I can't stand is chocolate covered cherries. I ate a whole box of them on Christmas morning when I was about nine years old and ended up throwing up during the present opening time - right on our orange shag rug. Yuck.

Oh - and Mr. Bling - I think your Grandma's Broccoli casserole is probably delicious and Big T - I like pasta too. It is a very safe food to order at restaurants...

Ms. Baker

I don't like brussel sprouts when I was younger when my dad use to make them I would drop them under the table but later on I told my dad that I didn't like brussel sprouts. I like ice cream a lot and I have even eaten a pint of ice cream in a few minutes on a couple of occasions. I think my whole family likes ice cream we tend to pig out on it when it is in front of us but I haven't had ice cream for what seems a long time but was really only a few days.

Anonymous said...

I was 3,what do you expect of me ms.baker.I am sure a lot of us did a lot of stupid stuff when we were three.big t I also like ice cream but I don't like eating it a lot.My mom always tries to hide sweets from me and my family, but she is no match for us.One thing I love(that I didn't try till I went to pigwidgeons house)is scallops. They are really goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood
Especially wrapped in bacon.I really like sea,and dairy food.Especially cheese.Daphne my mom also makes banana bread but I like pumpkin bread better.I have another story that involves pizza and a microwave.
It all started one afternoon. When my mom told me to microwave pizza. She said 50 seconds but I thought she said 50 minutes. So I put the microwave on for 50 minutes. In about 2 minutes I got bored of waiting for my food.I went to my kitchen to check on my pizza. When I got up there, there was smoke coming from the microwave, and of I was stupid and just sat there. But before I set the house into flames. My brother came and shut it off.By the time I retrieved my pizza,it was bubbling, and it fell through the plate(It was my first time using a microwave). So there is always a morale to my stories, and to this story is to always follow directions.Or it could turn out you will set the place on fire.

Anonymous said...

I like to cook a lot of food but the only thing that i dont like about cooking is reading the directions. I like cooking hamburgers because the sound of the sizzling of the patty sounds very cool.Tomorrow we are going to bring in some yummy white cup cakes because it is my birthday, it is this friday (tomorow).

Big T i L-O-V-E brussle sprouts they are so good, i cant stay away from them if i eat some, if there in front of me :). I also like mac&cheese and if you mix peas, and kechup oh it s so yummy now I'm getting hungrey :). I love peas they make my tummy feel happy, it doesnt tast like anything really with is why i like it so much and it practically goes good with anything.

The word "capital" is a mistake I wanted to write the word capitalize.

Funny tale Flanders, but the story of yours that I most connect with was the one where you fell off of the chair.
When I was about three, our family took a trip to Maine. We went to dinner at an outdoor lobster shack, where patrons sit on picnic tables. I had never even heard of lobster before, but I made up my mind that I had to eat one. My parents tried to talk me out of it, but I stood steadfast in my opinion. I ordered a whole large lobster for myself, and sat down at the picnic table. On my first bite, I fell backwards off of the table. To this day, I don't know if it was that I didn't like the taste, the texture was weird, or I just wasn't expecting the flavor. No matter what, I was in some sort of momentary shock. I now brace myself before tasting new foods, for fear of a similar incedent.

Fun Fact: Lobsters are from the same animal group as coackroaches.

Anonymous said...

phatt mann, that fun fact of yours was disgusting.
I remember trying lobster my first time, i was little and my dad had gotten out from the Natinal gards and we went in this cruse, my dad orderd lobster and he said it was good so he orderd me some and wen it came I was really excided to get the lobster that when he put it on the table i graded it in my hands and stuffed it in my mouth as far as i could then took and bite and my eyes got real wide and i spit it out and had to rub my toung with a napkin to get the tast out.

Anonymous said...

Oops sorry i didn't capitalize the Is again, my bad.

Anonymous said...

Urg! I keep doing it sorry.

Anonymous said...

Brussell sprouts aren't my favorite food, or vegetable but I would eat them. It seems that people either like, or dislike brussell sprouts, none really have a non-preference. Midnight, I guess you don't really like lobster than. Last year, when we went to Maine, we had lobster almost every day. I know this might sound tasty to some of you but not to me. I like lobster, but having it six times in seven days for me is too much.

I like making grilled cheeses because they are easy to make. All you need to do to make a grilled cheese is: Get two peices of bread, Put butter one one side of each peice of bread and put the cheese on the bread and then watch and hear the grilled cheese sizzle.
